Amateur radio repeaters
Amateur radio repeaters in Italy: find the channel, input frequency and shift of any repeater from the official channel plan, learn how to use it in FM and discover the DMR, C4FM, D-STAR and EchoLink digital networks.
Amateur radio repeaters: find channel and shift
Type the frequency you see in a repeater list (MHz) or the channel name, new or old: RV48, R0, R0 Alfa, RU002, RU1, RH1, RF81, RM0.
Official repeater channel plan
From the Italian MISE circular of 16 May 2022, in force since 1 June 2022. 12.5 kHz channels for FM and digital modes; 435–438 MHz is reserved for satellites.

How to use an FM repeater
The repeater receives on its input and retransmits on its output from a high site: with a handheld you cover distances that would be impossible simplex.
Set frequency and shift
Tune the repeater output and set the shift: −600 kHz on 2 m, +1.6 MHz on 70 cm. Many radios do it automatically on 2 m, but always check.
Set the access tone
Many repeaters open only with a CTCSS sub-audio tone: set it for transmit to the value given in the repeater list. Some older repeaters open with a 1750 Hz tone burst.
Listen before you talk
Listen for a few seconds: the repeater may be in use. Then call with your callsign, for example “IZ6CLV listening”.
Leave a gap between overs
Wait for the repeater to drop or for the courtesy tone before replying, so others can break in, including for emergencies. Keep overs short: many repeaters have a time-out timer.
Program the radio
With the free CHIRP software you program frequencies, shifts and tones from the computer instead of the radio keypad, and you can save the configuration.
Digital and networked repeaters
Many repeaters today are digital or linked over the Internet: the same repeater can put you in contact with radio amateurs worldwide.
DMR
Two-timeslot digital standard: you need a personal DMR ID, the repeater colour code and the talkgroup. The most widely used network is BrandMeister; the Italian national talkgroup is 222.
C4FM / System Fusion
Yaesu’s digital system: many repeaters accept both FM and digital. With Wires-X repeaters connect to virtual rooms on the Internet.
D-STAR
Icom’s digital system: repeaters link to reflectors on the Internet; your callsign must be registered on a gateway.
EchoLink and AllStar
They link FM repeaters and stations over the Internet. With EchoLink you can also connect from a computer or phone after licence validation.
Where to find active repeaters

Italian rules in brief
- A general authorisation for a repeater can be requested by legally constituted amateur radio associations and by individual radio amateurs holding a general authorisation.
- A repeater installed in one’s own station or at the address given in the authorisation does not need a separate general authorisation.
- The transmitter’s effective radiated power (ERP) must not exceed 10 W; the repeater must be open to all radio amateurs and the person in charge must be able to switch it off quickly if it causes interference.
- On bands where the service is secondary (50 MHz and 1.2 GHz) no protection from interference can be claimed. Changes of frequency or location must be notified to the inspectorate in advance.

Common problems
The repeater does not open
Check the transmit CTCSS tone and the shift. If the repeater uses no tones, try the 1750 Hz tone burst.
I hear the repeater but it does not hear me
Usually the shift is wrong or reversed; otherwise power or antenna are not enough: try from a higher spot or with an outdoor antenna.
Distorted or low audio
On 12.5 kHz channels use narrow FM: wide FM sounds distorted and disturbs adjacent channels.
The repeater cuts off during an over
The time-out timer ended the transmission: keep overs shorter and let the repeater reset.
On DMR I hear nobody
Check colour code, timeslot and talkgroup in the programmed channel, and that your DMR ID is registered.
